I have a desk top and a lap top. I am using wireless modem for my internet surfing. Recently I try to install wireless networking of these two PC, it mentioned that I need the network cable. Would like to confirm that by having the wireless modem, I still need wireless network cable to network these two PC. Please advise. (I am using window XP).
Wireless network connection?
If you're wireless router is already connected to high-speed modem (DSL/Cable) then there's no further configuring needed to be done between your router and your high-speed modem.
To go to the route of truly being wireless, just make sure that the network card you're installing on your computer is also wireless. Most network cards are configured to be DHCP to begin. You'll just need to make sure that if you have WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) enabled to have the same WEP keys entered on your desktop's wireless NIC card. Otherwise, your desktop won't be permitted to communicate with the router.
Some wireless routers comes with the optional wired ports in which case, you can simply use a standard NIC card and use a straight CAT5 network cable to connect the two. No WEP keys needed here.
You're laptop (if wireless) will continue to work using the wireless router and your desktop will communicate via wireless or wired.
Make sure that you have DHCP enabled on your wireless router so that it automatically assigns an IP address to your desktop, or if you prefer, enter the IP address manually (DHCP preferred).
Reply:you just need the networking cable to let the computer talk to the wireless router/modem so it can configure it. you wont have to keep it connected. this is a common method of automated setup for user-friendly wireless compnents
Reply:u need network cable to connect ur modem and router ..
u need to make two connections with ur cables
first one will connect modem and router
second one will go from ur desktop PC to router ..
ur router shd have 4 ports to connect four PC at one time ..so u can connect on any port but first one is always recommended
