New Laptop - 'Network Cable Unplugged'?!?

I just got my brother's laptop. It connected to the wireless network at his house, but not at mine. My network is working for my roommates though.

The computer detects the wireless network, but when I try to connect it won't let me. When I try to plug directly to the network (with the cable), it goes on a cycle of attempting to connect and saying 'a network cable is unplugged'.

But when I plug the cable into my old computer, the internet is fine.

What is going on?!!?

I'd be grateful if someone could help me out!

New Laptop - 'Network Cable Unplugged'?!?
hope this helps. what version of Windows do u have Vista will act diffrently then XP. however you should be able to do this... whne your in the network connection right click the LAN connection and click on Properties, window will pop up make sure all the tiny boxes are checked then click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties another window will pop up make sure that "Obtain IP Address Auto" is choosen and make sure that "Obtain DNS" is choosen also you do want to make sure that you firewall is alowing the internet to go threw... however if non of these seem to work you may have a biger problem... sometime in rare caes the modem insed the computer might be unpluged it happens but not as often as you think ... in that case i would either call some one who knows computers or if your brave enough open the Laptop and try to fix the modem... again i hope this helps if u have any q? regarting these answer please e-mail me with subject line/ "Network Cable Unplugged"
Reply:just go through the settings and make sure everything is right. thats the only thing i could think of.
Reply:It' possible your brother setup static IP address on the network adapters.

Double check to make sure both network ports are setup to received IP address automatically.

Locating the Network Properties

Start the machine and log in as Administrator or an Administrator-equivalent user.

Double-click My Computer. Double-click Control Panel. Double-click Network Connections.

Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties.

In the box labeled "Components checked are used by this connection", make sure Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is present and checked.

If it is not, click Install, double-click Protocol, select TCP/IP, and click OK.

2.2 Configuring Network Protocols

Click obtain an IP address to obtain a server address automatically.

Good Luck!
Reply:make sure that there is no security encryptions on the wireless service. if there is get the info to use it and for the cable make sure you are using an ethernet cable

anything else send me a message or 2
Reply:go to run

-%26gt;

devmgmt.msc

device manager

make sure

all of your network adapters are enabled.

also if you have an on/off switch for your wireless card, turn it on.

updating drivers may be helpful as well.

you may not have the correct password as prev mentioned, but it may just be a software / configuration error as well.
Reply:There might be something wrong on the ethernet port of your router or modem. Try plugging it on a different ethernet port. Try to check maybe the local area connection status is "limited or no connectivity". Change that status by uncheck the box "notify when this connection has limited or no connectivity" under the General tab of LAN properties.
