Wireless network detected but can't access other any website/can't browse..?

actiontec modem gt701wg, toshiba laptop, win xp. desktop computer hard-wired to modem using ethernet is working fine.able to detect actiontec(security is off) but still can't browse. no anti-virus/firewall/spysweeper running.even changed channel. also renamed the essid.restart computer-able to detect the new network name-still can't browse. able toaccess other wireless network in range. checked device manager wireles adaptor seems ok-no red x or yellow exclamation or question mark. when i detected new wireless name i assigned it says connected but still can't browse.did ipconfig i got : ethernet adapter local area connection media state media disconnected (of course) and ethernet adapter wireless network connection ip add:169.254.x.x subnet is 254.254.x.x-can't remember, and no default gateway. can't ping the modem...could it be the laptop itself - the wireless card since i got ip add:169.x.x.x ? even it's able to detect other wireless networks? could someone clearly explain? thanks.

repair the network connection and try again. here is how to do it:

Reply:169.254.x.x is assigned by a client to itself when it is set up to use DHCP but cannot contact a DHCP server. Check the dhcp settings on your modem/router. Make sure dhcp is turned on. Make sure there are enough addresses to be handed out.

Or set up the laptop with a static address. Just make sure its out of the range your router will give out.
