Network slow down, maybe due to the wired router.Help?

I have connected my computer to a router and share the bandwidth with couple of my housemates. Recently, the network slowed down to a level like you can never go to youtube. I checked the router and found out that all the lights keep blinking. Even though i disconnected all the other network and only connect my computer to my girlfriend's computer via the router, the speed still slow and the router still blinking. Now, i skipped the router and directly plug the network cable to my computer and the speed is faster but still a bit slow. So, what is the problem?

Network slow down, maybe due to the wired router.Help?
Update: Make sure you turn off your BT program, prior to resetting the Modem and Router

Also what Brand and Model? Did it still blink in sync once you turned it off and back on?

Reset the router and the cable/DSL

Anybody on the network doing Peer to Peer like torrents?

That can mess up your router until reset
Reply:your network provider is having issues.
Reply:unplug both the router and modem for 5 minutes. then plug the modem back in. when that is up and running, plug in the router. this will reset both of them and you should be back up to speed
Reply:IF IT IS A WIRELSS ROUTER YOU MAY HAVE OTHER PEOPLE USING THE ROUTER OUTSIDE YOUR MATES.
Reply:Turn the modem and router off for 5 minutes
Reply:You never said what you're connecting to - DSL? Cable? T-1? (NOT!)

Power down the modem and the router. Leave off for at least 2-3 minutes, so that all the electricity drains out of them. Turn the modem on first. Once it is COMPLETELY up and running, THEN turn your router on. THEN start your pc.

If performance is still poor, then you may be sharing access - cable companies do not give you a dedicated line, but DSL does. Call your provider and have their tech support check things out from their end. They will tell you to repeat the above procedure. Humor them. Eventually they will be able to tell you whether the problem is at your end or inside their wires. Whether they fess up is a different question.

One other note: is the router a wireless or wired router? IF wireless, have you locked outsiders away from it by setting some level of security? If not, you could be competing against total strangers for access.

Reply:I think you have trojan or worm on your PC. It install itself and open a connection to outside. So let says that the worm/trojan send some files out to the internet or opening a port so every peer-to-peer software client like Kazaa or Gnutella or Napster can access your share music/movie folder. Install a good Anti Virus (e.g: AVG) and also Anti Spyware (e.g: Spybot Search %26amp; Destroy). And then scan the system from virus/trojan/worm and also spyware/adware. I bet 80% the problem cames from there :D
