Private network linked to a dsl modem- connectivity problem with one of the station?

i have a private network linking about 12 computers thru a server. i changed from dial-up connection to an ADSL connection by plugging the dsl modem directly into the switch. now i had problems regarding to the shared folders on the private network + i have a problem with one computer which is a DELL laptop OS: windows xp -- i can ping any web server successfully but i can not reach it by the explorer

ps: all the configuration and protocols are in place ( ip addresse, network workgroup,..)

i troubleshoot the network by the msn troubleshooter the error was "no proxy server" which i couldn't understand, how the other computers are connected?

can any body help?

I Agree, Router

Did you overlook subnet mask ?all computers the same mask?..same mask = workgroup

A Client and Service must be installed for LAN connections on all computers named Client for Microsoft Networks %26amp; File %26amp; Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks .

If they are not installed services Workstation %26amp; Server wil not function. Also causing UNC(Universial name convention) to not function for Browsers or any method or software that recognizes %26amp; uses UNC type connections

** if these are not installed for LAN connection Two services are not available in Administrative Tools %26gt; Services

1) Server - Automatic

2) Workstation - Automatic

...Also...

Ip Routing enabled on server ?

Win Xp registry key

Start%26gt;Run%26gt;regedt32

Navigate to Registry key -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Tcpip \ Parameters

- look in right pane and see if this value is all ready there IPEnableRouter and select it, modify it to 1.

If its not there...

Add New Dword Value - IPEnableRouter

Default Value - 0 (means disabled)

Modify Value to 1 - Enabled

By enabling this value, a computer/server will route packets between networks, for your scenario other computers.

Reboot after change is made

Reply:Get a router and plug that into the DSL modem. You can plug the switch into one of the ports of the router. Then everything should work.

I set up a network the same way that you did - modem into an 8 port switch - and couldn't get on the internet. When I reinstalled the router and connected the switch to a router port everything worked, plus I got some extra ports.
Reply:You can not do this. To connect more than 1 machine you either need 2 network cards in the server and one connected to the modem, then use the server routing to pass the connection from the other card through, or you must buy a dsl router/modem and connect all the machines to it through the switch, including the server. In this case you do not need a second card for the server, or the modem.
