How do I network a Vista (Home Premium) pc and an XP SP2 pc via an Ethernet crossover cable?

Both machines have a network card (they are not wireless network cards) and I have one ADSL modem. I want to connect the ADSL modem via a USB port to my Vista machine and then connect the XP machine and the Vista machine with a crossover cable, so I can use the internet and share the printer which is connected to the Vista machine.

I understand that I can use a router or a wireless modem or wireless network cards but I am on a low budget and I want to know if it is possible to do this with the equipment that I currently have:

1- XP Service Pack 2 machine, with a network card

1- Vista (Home Premium) machine, with a network card

1- ADSL modem with a USB port

1- 10-meter crossover cable

I would greatly appreciate any kind of help in this regard.

does the ADSL modem have two slots for you to connect two pc's together? Because i dont think that this will work. Networking those two machines with a crossover cable is fine you'll just need to plug-it in and have a common workgroup name and your done. However, you're also connecting it to your adsl modem where will you plug it in next? The USB slot for instance? It will be a waste of time, and there's a big possibility that it will not work. Your ADSL modem is not designed for networking it is only for a single pc.

SOLUTION: Upgrade the modem to a 2wire or add a route in this setup
Reply:Networking two computers with a crossover cable is possible but sharing the Internal between the two is rather difficult. The reason is the fact that your ADSL-Modem is USB based. If you had an ADSL modem with a RJ-45 (Network Connector) Connector, you could have easily got a cheap Switch and connected everything using that. I suggest go for the option of finding yourself an alternative ADSL modem (with a RJ-45 Connector) or ADSL Router for that matter. Hope this solves your problem. Also you need not to buy either of the devices with wireless compatibility, as to keep the price economical.
Reply:i think that home editions of both XP %26amp; vista can't connect you to other computer (but can on the internet).
