I have my computer connected to my dads computer by a cable in his router. When I turned on my computer a message popped up saying that the network didn'g assign a network address. It's never done this before and when I left here a week ago everything worked fine. What is going on and how can I fix it?
Network not assigning Network Address?
You say connected by a cable in his router? If there is a router in the system it most likely issues the addresses. It is not unusall for these to sometimes hang and not issue an address. Its easy to fix, unplug the power from the router, wait a minute and reconnect it.
Wait for the router to reboot, usually when all the lights have "settled" takes a minute or two.
Then "repair" your connection. (On win xp you should see the two little computers in the lower right - right click on them and click repair.)
If all went correctly your address will be issued and your back online.
In some cases it may be necessary for you to restart your computer.
If you are connected to your dads computer and are not using a router you may need to get him to restart his computer to correct the problem.
Reply:If this problem has only started since your dad moved to Vista then it is probably the Vista that is not configured to share the Internet connection with your computer. This assumes that the cable from your computer is connected directly to your dad's computer (not a separate router).
