NetWork + Server?

I'm in process to start a small business, around 10 to 16 employees 16 hours with 2 shifts. Here is a bit of information before I ask my questions. I want to put a server in the office so that my employees can run the same application minimum of 6 and maximum of 10 employees will be using the same application at the same time while working.

How many servers I should use?

In what capacity of Hard Drive and RAM?

What else should be included in the server?

What do I need in order to connect all those computers with servers?

Do I need fire wall?

Can I use Internet at the same time with Network On?

Do I have to pay to some company for the connection after the networking is done?

I have been all over the internet and found alot, I would like to know it from members here what I should have/use?

Please do not refer me to dell.com hp.com or any other website.

Please reply only if you have had knowledge of Networking.

Thank You.;

1 Server will be more than sufficient for you use.

In what capacity of Hard Drive and RAM?

RAM Depending on what software and the load your going to put on it. But I would go no less than 4GB

HDD I would go for a 1TB Raid system using a standard Raid setup. I am saying that as my set up is smaller and still does my needs.

What else should be included in the server?

Well if your buying a server your aware of the Licences and stuff so apart from the usual Maybe Office products.

Once up and running and your comfy. Some things like a web server Apache or others with web development software to enable you to create (your intranet)

What do I need in order to connect all those computers with servers?

A router. There are many out there and depending on what set up you eventually go for and many options.

Do I need fire wall?

Only if you going to connect it to the outside world. However there are a number of ways of setting up your internal network like having a server that sits in the DMZ that is connected to the outside world etc but that a whole new thread.

Can I use Internet at the same time with Network On?

Yes

Do I have to pay to some company for the connection after the networking is done?

Your internal networking is yours so once it's installed unless you want maintenance there is no external re-occuring charges. Only the usually monthly ISP connection costs.
Reply:How many servers I should use?

Probably one if all that you want is to run one application. Make it a Domain Controller add the application. This is way oversimplifying the process but it isnt too difficult.

In what capacity of Hard Drive and RAM?

I would suggest 5 medium sized hard drives in a RAID5 array. Redundant, and fast. Please use a SCSI array controller if you can, they are way better for recovery. And put in at least 2 GB of RAM, 4 if possible.

What else should be included in the server?

Backup software and some backup device (tape drive or a group of external hard drives). Client access licenses for all machines to connect. Oh and a floppy drive if you can, servers are a pain to rebuild without a floppy drive.

What do I need in order to connect all those computers with servers? One 24 port (minimum) gigabit switch. One firewall.

Do I need fire wall?

Oh yes, and i wouldn't skimp on that. Plan on a $500 one for business class quality

Can I use Internet at the same time with Network On?

If it configured correctly you can use the internet, your line of business application, shared folders, printers, and any other network available services at the same time.

Do I have to pay to some company for the connection after the networking is done?

If you are referring to the connections to the server, no you don't. You own it all. You will of course need to upkeep your internet connection, and that you have to pay for.

You might want to get a good consultant to help design and implement your system. Find one by reference, consultants are a dime a thousand, but a good one is priceless to keep your business running smoothly.
