I have had this issue for a while and have yet to figure it out. 75 percent of the time, when I power on my computer, the network icon will show a red X. If I go and try to resolve the problem, I get a message telling me their is no network adapter. Then I look in Device Manager, and sure enough, there is no longer a network adapter.
However, I then restart the computer and the network adapter and connectivity returns. The connection is not loose and nothing seems loose inside the computer though neither one of those seem likely anyways.
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium
Any ideas anyone? Thanks
Network adapter disappears randomly when powering on computer, returns on restart....?
I'm suspecting that you're having something that's hijacking your connection for it's own nefarious purposes. Try this and see if it doesn't solve your problem. Start at the top of this list. Install the products one at a time and then install all of their updates. Have each one complete a full scan before proceeding to the next one. One of these *should* fix your problem. Keep in mind that everyone of these things is either free of charge or open source. When you're done, be sure to go to Windows Update and apply ALL of the patches.

Reply:Did you happen to download the Vista service pack 1 when it came out? If you did, this pack was taken back because it messed up a ton of computers. Vista has all types of bugs in it and they will not have a fix for a while. Try a rollback to when you remember that this issue was not happening.
The other thing is, did you install this adapter? is it put in properly and also, is it connected tight?
Vista is CRAP
