I'm told that AOL does not seem to be compatible with setting up a wireless network - apparently a large percentage of routers etc won't work if you have AOL. Just wondered if anyone has found a way around this problem?
I got a Wifimax (a wi fi device which goes into the USB port and beams out the signal to whatever computers you want in your wireless network). I want to use it with a PSP and a laptop. But although it appears to be connected and my laptop is detecting it, I can't actually get them to connect.
I looked in the wireless network settings and it says "Limited or no connectivity" and when you go into 'details' the message reads:
"You might not be able to access the internet or some network resources. This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to this computer".
Is this something I can fix, and does anyone know how? Or can AOL do anything about it? Has anyone else managed to get one of these things working with an AOL computer?
Connecting a wireless network to AOL - does it work?
I tried for 2-3 months with different routers before realising this. Get shot of AOL they're trouble! the only router that will work freely is one that comes from them. I tried a box that they supplied to another person- they would have supplied me with the same but why pay when someone offers u one. And even with that I failed.
The only way to get around it is if you can unlock the router but even then the AOL connection is terrible it still wont let you through. eg I was using a product supplied by AOL and their own products don't work on their service so what hope is there. The last straw was when I couldn't connect at all throught the dial up wired broadband equipment they gave me and after updating this and updating that and running around getting cds from currys and dixons and what ever I just got shot of them. They're not exactly the best out there, there are better packages n if all else fails go to BT at least once its set up theres no trouble n going wireless is not an issue. Although customer service is bad in all places with BT once its done you won't need to call them again and they, like nearly every other company have this live online help which I found useful and to be honest thats all I needed was 10 mins with them to go through some configurations to match up to my equipment and I never called them again and their internet has never cut off and thats what you really want. I'm actually now with talk talk which the product isn't bad its again the customer service which took them six months just to make a simple configuration and it was due to incompatance and lack of product knowlage. I only got things sorted when the guy on the other end knew the product and without me fully explaing anything told me what I had to do and within a couple of mins I was back online.
I had NTL before and I never got round to experiencing their Internet service (when it used to dial-up) again because customer service was bad and in the end we cancelled otherwise the products were ok just the fact that admin and customer service were bad. Thinking of going with Sky as the normal chanels r now boring so might do the ful package- again I know whats going to happen. Under trained advisors with lack of product knowledge and the only help they can give is reading the q's on their on screen troubleshooter and we spend an hour answering and doing as stated by troubleshooter and not getting down to the actual problem.
I think for ppl who don't have the time or patiance-go with BT. Like I said bad customer service is everywhere but its less in BT (from what I've experienced) and once your set theres rarely any need to call them back.
Sorry for the long post but this is subject I like to pour my heart out on as you can see I have a good history of experiencing various telecom and isp sevices!

Reply:AOL Broodband Silver does not accept wireless; you need to upgrade to Gold or Platinum.
